The 3rd generation Suzuki Swift Sport was launched in SA at the RedStar Raceway. The big news is the first SA appearance of Suzuki’s Boosterjet turbo engine.

As an added bonus, Suzuki also revealed a new top version of the Vitara powered by the same engine.

The new Swift Sport is based on the “ordinary” Swift that was launched here last year and has received many accolades since in 1.2L basic form.

Now the new Sport takes the same shell and then makes changes to the grille, body kit with front and side skirts, attractive polished silver alloys, and 2 mean looking exhaust outlets at the rear.

On the interior, tombstone sports seats, red detailing and the upgraded infotainment screen feature. Then add in some of the special colours, starting with the now familiar (to the Swift Sport only) Competition Yellow.

However, it’s under the skin where it really matters. Starting with the 1.4L Boosterjet turbo engine. While numbers of 103kW and 230Nm may sound moderate, it was Colin Chapman of Lotus fame who said “for increased speed, reduce weight”.

The Sport has been put on a crash diet and the new car is a full 90kg lighter than the previous generation. The power to weight ratio places it among many more powerful AND more expensive competitors. Offered with a 6 speed gearbox in either manual or automatic options, this also makes the car more practical in commuting duties.

BUT……watch the whole video and you will see for yourself where this little car really comes to life. With its light weight and incredibly sharp handling, this is a fun car with a capital F.

Priced at R315 900 in manual and R335 900 in automatic form this includes a 4 year/ 60 000km service plan.

The new Vitara turbo is based on the GLX specification versions of the range, so this includes all the luxury extras that you would expect at this level. The Boosterjet engine adds lots of extra performance to the recipe and makes an interesting option in this category.

The Vitara Turbo is priced at R378 900 in manual and R397 900 in automatic.
